Pearls - a woman's version of the red power tie

Pearls: The simple, elegant, timeless classic you likely remember from your mother or grandmother's jewelry box. Maybe you were even lucky enough to have a strand passed down to you - a family heirloom of sorts. It would make sense. After all, they've been a fashion mainstay for decades.

But this classic gemstone is in the midst of a major makeover.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've likely noticed pearls making quite a comeback lately. From the red carpet to the campaign trail, we're in the midst of a pearl resurgence. Stars such as Kim Kardashian, Ellen DeGeneres, Lupita Nyong'o, Kris Jenner (she even recently launched her own line of faux pearl jewelry) and Beyonce (yes, we're still talking about her famous Met Gala dress - wow) are bringing the look to new heights - and for good reason!

These aren't your mother's pearls. Today's look is edgy, sleek and creative. Classic is still in, but fashionistas are mixing it up with white, black, pink, peach, green, gold and peacock gemstones. Tahitian South Sea Pearls, sold at online retailers such as The Pearl Source, are very much in style. Best of all, you don't have to break the bank to get the look you're going for. For something brighter, you can pair your ensemble with bronze, green or silver studs. For an even dressier look, you can pair pearls with just about any other gemstone. This pink freshwater pendant incorporates diamonds beautifully.

They say pearls are a woman's version of the red power tie. It's not hard to see why with the styles that are trending as we speak.
