I participated in the Mary Lambert Heart On My Sleeve album review program as a member of One2One Network. I was provided a free album to review but all opinions are my own.
I'll be honest I had never heard of Mary Lambert before receiving a copy of her album for my review. But now that I have listened to her music and read some information about her I am quite impressed with her abilities as a musician. The one thing that most impressed me is how "real" she is. By that I mean what she sings about is what she's actually experienced in life.
Written within the past
year (with lyrics by Lambert and music co-written by Lambert,
co-producers Eric Rosse and Benny Cassette, and songwriter MoZella),
Heart On My Sleeve is an honest depiction of where Lambert is now.
“This year has been the best of my entire life, which is not to say it
hasn't come with its fair share of hurdles, heartbreak, and harsh
lessons,” she says. “I can only write about the experiences I've had. I
signed to a major label. I went through a break-up. I figured out how to
be an independent person. I have been terrifyingly honest to the public
about traumatic events in my life. I met the woman of my dreams. I have
been on the road nonstop, away from those I love, but with the
opportunity to sing about gay rights to hundreds of thousands of people.
This album is inspired by the depth of all of that love, and the
journey that it takes to get there.”
To me that is just as important as the music itself. I like to know what I'm listening to is for real, not just a bunch of made of verses to get peoples attention. Maybe it's just me but it makes the song seem so much more real and relevant if it's something that someone actually did (and can) experience. I've been knowing a time or two to compare my life to songs I've heard. Of course most of the time it's only a line or two, but with these songs I can relate a hole lot more, which makes me want to listen to them even more. We all have good times, and bad times, and even some big time trials. But I'm sure most of us couldn't even begin to imagine turning them into something beautiful like music for others to enjoy.
If you're not familiar with Mary Lambert I encourage you to listen to the above video and check her out for yourself.
